he biblical scriptures show that God is the only man with the power to resurrect a soul from death, however, the new testament says a different story. Jesus was actually recorded to bring a man back to life 4 days after he had been buried. This story is known as the Raising of Lazarus.

Lazarus is the name given by the Gospel According to Luke (16:19–31) to the beggar in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. It is the only proper name attached to a character in the parables of Jesus. The name Lazarus in Greek is Lazaros, which comes from the Hebrew, Eleazar, meaning “He, (God) has helped.” Let’s revisit the Bible story of Lazarus to see how God helped him.

Mary and Martha’s brother, Lazarus of Bethany, resided close to Jerusalem in Bethany. According to the story, Jesus cherished Lazarus and his sisters and was “greatly concerned” when Lazarus passed away from an illness.

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

John 11:1-4

Jesus was so saddened by Lazarus’ sudden death that after his burial, he performed a miracle of resurrecting Lazarus. According to John 11:1-4, many people were present whilst Jesus performed the miracle and they all saw how Lazarus raised from his grave on his own two feet with his burial clothes on.

In the 12th chapter of the Gospel of John, Lazarus is referenced once again. Jesus returns to Bethany six days before the Passover, the day of his crucifixion, and Lazarus joins a meal prepared by his sister Martha. Numerous Jews are drawn to Jesus and Lazarus, and the narrator claims that the high priests are considering killing Lazarus because so many people have accepted Jesus as the Messiah as a result of his reviving Lazarus from the dead.

One interesting factor is that this story leads to the creation of a medical syndrome named Lazarus. This name refers to the sudden restart of the heart after a person had passed away which is considered to be a miracle similar to how Jesus resurrected Lazarus.
