urder alone can get you a lifetime in jail if not execution but what about murder, rape, and cannibalism? I mean what was wrong with the justice system when it was unearthed that Sagawa had murdered the girl he loved in cold blood? Let’s dig in. Issei Sagawa is now a celebrity in Japan, he has appeared in many interviews and written a lot of stories with chapters depicting how he dismembered Renee Hartevelt and fed on her flesh. Issei has never felt sorry for what he did, instead, he is well proud of it. He claimed that killing Renee and feeding on her flesh was natural. This man said once in an interview that he plans on doing it again! He had been planning cannibalism three decades before meeting Renee. Alright, let’s take a look at his life before Renee’s.

His Early Life

Most killers often claim that they were abused by their parents or bullied by friends and society but Issie Sagawa, who was born on the 26th day of April 1949 claimed he never faced such. He was one of the many fortunate Japanese children who were birthed by rich parents, he never really had to face any financial hardship as a child and while growing up. But Issie Sagawa had a health condition.

Unlike some infants around the world, Sagawa was born weak and fragile, he was small and had tiny legs. For this reason, Issie could not face the shame of being seen as a different human being, he stayed indoors for most of his childhood. Since he had little or no business with the outside world Issie stuck with his books, he read a lot and wide.

If you have read the popular book Hansel and Gretel which shows a period of famine once in Europe you would know that the book illustrated cannibalism. Issie Sagawa didn’t just love to read, he preferred bloody stories that show the act of killing someone, in fact, Hansel and Gretel was his favorite novel.

His First Attempt

Issie was never fascinated by kissing and hugging, he considered bitting off the flesh of his loved ones is the perfect way to show affection. He always wondered how tasty the thigh of his classmates would be. He fell for beautiful white women but only to have a taste of their flesh.

Issei’s first victim was a German woman who was sleeping peacefully in her room when Issei came in, he attempted to slice part of her buttocks but the woman caught him. Issie Sagawa was then arrested by the police for attempted rape but the case was dropped when Issie’s father reportedly paid a huge sum to the victim.

Due to this, his hunger for human meat grew stronger each day, he had been close once how about a second trial.

Issie Finally Got His Bite In 32 Years

Issie moved to Paris to study literature and after a while, in his academics, he started bringing prostitutes home every night and each time he attempted to shoot them but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. Due to his lack of courage, Issei’s hunger for human meat continued to grow.

He finally met a quite beautiful lady that would bring fame into his life as a cannibal. Renee Hartevelt was a 25-year-old Dutch woman at the time of her death. Renee was friendly and lovely but Issie wanted to have a taste of her skin. A few days after their first meeting Issie invited her to his apartment apparently to help with an assignment.

Renee’s attention was taken by the assignment when the bullet flew through her neck, she died instantly. Issie fainted, he could not believe he had killed someone. This was how far he ever went in his previous 32 years of craving human meat.

He probably thought now was the time to show his affection to Renee he had sex with her corpse before cutting her body into bits. He even took records in form of pictures at each stage of the crime, he ate to his satisfaction. When the remains began to stink he decided to dump them in a lake.

The Arrest

It turned out that Issie’s plan to dump the body in a lake was a bad one, the police arrested him when they saw two blood wretched suitcases with him. This is where you would say it’s over for him but NO.

He was held in prison for two years, patiently waiting for the day of trial that never came. His rich dad paid a very good lawyer, Issie was declared mentally unfit to stand trial. Due to this reason, he was locked in a mental health facility.

A popular Japanese writer visited the facility for an interview with the murderer, this greatly facilitated his fame in Japan. He was soon released by French authorities because the charges were dropped and deported back to Japan. Issie Sagawa was tested and declared mentally stable.

Issie Sagawa became a celebrity who was invited to talk and write about his heinous crime, he was proud of what he did, made a living from it, and make sure he encourages people.

Karma In The End

You are probably feeling sorry for Renee right now, a beautiful lady with a bright future killed in such a bizarre way yet her murderer gets to walk even till this day. Well, that isn’t completely true.

After his sudden fame, Issie was soon cast aside by his own society, no organization or writer was willing to work with him anymore. Issie is now in his early 70s, living somewhere outside Tokyo. He was reported to be dealing with a deadly heart disease, fed through a tube into his stomach, limited to the distance his wheelchair can take him. No one would marry him, he has been surviving with the help of his brother who still thinks he needs to take care of his brother.

“The desire to eat people become so intense around June when women start wearing less and showing more skin. So yes, I do still harbor this desire and I specifically want to eat a Japanese woman this time”-Issie Sagawa
