On December 24, 1971, Juliane Koepcke was aboard a LANSA Flight 508 from Lima to Pucallpa when the plane was hit by lightning and its engine caught fire. The damage caused the aircraft to abruptly descend and break apart in mid-air. Although Juliane had been strapped into her seat, she managed to unbuckle herself and deploy her lifejacket before she fell 10,000 feet. Miraculously, Juliane survived the fall and ended up as the only survivor of the 93 passengers and crew on board.

When recounting her experience, Juliane has said that while falling she felt a sense of peace come over her “as if I were floating down in slow motion”. She had been taught how to survive in difficult situations by her father who worked as an ornithologist in Peru’s rainforest so when she landed she immediately knew what steps to take. After four days of walking through dense jungle with no food or water, Juliane eventually came across a river which allowed her to drink clean water and reach rescue more quickly.

She used a compass and map she had taken from the plane to find her way through the dense undergrowth. At night, Juliane slept in tree tops as an extra precaution against potential predators.
